Requiem Aeternam Dona Eis, Domine...

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. (Matt. 5:7)

During this month devoted to pray especially for the Holy Souls, our Holy Mother Church commends alms giving, indulgences and works of penance to be carried out by the living on behalf of the dead to implore God's merciful help and atone for their sins.

According to the Angelic Doctor of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas, the fire of Purgatory is equal in intensity to the fire of Hell!  So let us fulfill our responsibility as members of the Body of Christ to accompany our faithful departed with our prayers, sacrifices and penances to help speed their way to a place of light and peace.

In turn, we can be assured that even the little acts of charity toward these suffering souls are blessed by God and will hasten the delivery of their souls from the purifying flames.  Let us listen to the advice of the Cure d’Ars: “If one knew what we may obtain from God by the intercession of the Poor Souls, they would not be so much abandoned.  Let us pray a great deal for them, they will pray for us.” (Novena for the Relief of the Poor Souls in Purgatory).

There are many ways to help the Holy Souls such as:
  • Have Masses offered for them.
  • Pray the Rosary and ask Mary, our Mother of Mercy to intercede for them.
  • Pray the Stations of the Cross and meditate on the Passion of Christ.
  • Spread devotion to them.
  • Attend Eucharistic Adoration and pray for them.
  • Gain all the indulgences you can, and apply them to the Holy Souls.
  • Fast and offer up little sacrifices for them.

RESOLUTION:  Each time I reach for that cell phone, iPhone, iPad, laptop, computer or when I am losing patience or tempted to anger, I will think of the Holy Souls and say: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

To us who are alive, may God grant pardon for our sins, and to all the dead, a place of light and peace…so may we all live happily for ever with Christ whom we believe truly rose from the dead.
(Solemn Blessing on the feast of the Holy Souls)

Deo Gratias!

Introit: Requiem

REQUIEM aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion,
et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem.
Exaudi orationem meam,
ad te omnis care veniet.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.

ETERNAL rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.
You are praised, God, in Zion,
and homage will be paid to You in Jerusalem.
Hear my prayer,
to You all flesh will come.
Grant them eternal rest, Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.
