Preparing for Pentecost

In these days between the feast of the Ascension and Pentecost we prepare ourselves for the coming of the Holy Spirit. The preparation consists in a longing - a yearning - for a new influx of His grace and a new awareness of His presence in our lives - in our very souls.
No matter who we are or how we feel or what we are engaged in, we know our neediness, our inadequacy. Just by acknowledging this need and deepening our desire, we stretch our capacity for God.
Each time He comes to us He brings a new influx of His gifts and graces: Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, Fortitude, Piety, Fear of the Lord. Let us pray to Him in the words of holy Church:

Holy Spirit, Lord of light,
From the clear celestial height,
Shed a ray of light divine.

Come, Thou Father of the Poor,
Come with treasurer which endure;
Come thou Light of all that live.

Thou of comforters the best,
Thou, the soul's most welcome guest,
Sweet refreshment here below.

In our labor, rest most sweet;
Pleasant coolness in the heat;
solace in the midst of woe.

O most blessed Light divine,
Shine within these hearts of Thine,
And our inmost being fill:

If Thou take Thy grace away,
Nothing pure in man will stay;
Nothing free from taint of ill.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew,
On our dryness pour Thy dew,
Wash the stains of guilt away.

Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.

On the faithful, who adore
And confess Thee evermore,
In Thy sevenfold gift descend:

Give them comfort when they die;
Give them life with Thee on high,
Give them joys that never end.

Amen Alleluia
